Quick Jim Intro

For those who don’t know me, I’m 28 years old, but trapped inside an older man’s body! I’m a husband, dad, water skier, guitar player, dirt bike rider, speaker, teacher, audio book narrator, and a bestselling, Christy Hall of Fame author. I have two outstanding grown sons and live with my amazing wife in eastern Washington state.

You can find out more about me here on my website and can subscribe to my newsletter in the upper right part of this page if you’d like to be encouraged, inspired and sometimes challenged, as well as find out the latest things going on with me.

And if you’re into social media, here’s where to find me there:

My latest release is the fifth in a series called, The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone. I co-wrote it with my great friend, Susan May Warren and her son, David. Here’s a quick peek on what it’s about:

He fled the future with blood on his hands. So Detective Rembrandt Stone will do anything to change the past.
Once more, everything Rembrandt loves has been stolen from him. Now, he has one last chance to set things right and stop a killer he’s hunted across four timelines. But, he gets tangled in a petty crime that just might cost him his one chance at justice.

With two murders to stop, and thirty-eight lives still in the balance, Rembrandt must be flawless in his battle against time if he wants to win back the

future he longs for. Play it wrong and his life will remain shattered beyond repair.

And the sacrifices he’ll have to make to return to his wife and daughter are almost unthinkable.

The stakes have never been higher in the heart-wrenching, edge-of-your-seat fifth installment in the riveting series, The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone.

Now, a question for you to ponder about time travel …

If You Could Change Your Past, Would You? Should You?

Time travel has always fascinated me. Books, movies, TV shows, short stories … I’ve been a voracious consumer of them all my life. So has my friend, Susan May Warren. That’s one of the core reasons she and I (along with her son, David) wrote our six book time travel series, The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone.

What about you? Do you enjoy time travel stories? Even if you don’t read or watch much in that genre, have you ever fantasized about going back into your past and changing a mistake you made?

Me too. Often. Which brings us to the headline of my post: If you could change the past, would you do it? Many of us would say YES!

Why do we say that? And should we?

Why We Say Yes

I’ve yet to meet anyone who sometimes struggles with letting go of regrets from their past. “If only I’d” is a common mantra among many of us. We imagine a different choice that would have set us on a radically different path where everything would have turned out better.

The hope of a different, richer, more joy filled life haunts us. And the wounds of poor choices fester as we contemplate the moments that went wrong.

But if we had the power, Should We Change Our Past?

If you believe in the Butterfly Effect, I suggest the answer is no. As you’re aware, the Butterfly Effect says even the smallest action (the flap of a butterfly’s wings) can change things in monumental ways (create a hurricane on the other side of the world). What would we lose in the present if we flapped our wings in the past? My guess is more than we can imagine.

If you believe in Romans 8:28 I would again suggest no, changing the past would not be the best choice. If we believe that God somehow works all things for good in the end, then how could we make a choice that would take the tapestry out of His hands?

Yes, I think we can make poor choices; so poor sometimes that we destroy parts of ourselves and parts of others. But God is infinite in his vision and creativity, able to weave a glorious part of the tapestry out of poor choices.

As soon as we choose a path, even the destructive ones, I believe God can reroute our journey from the previous path into one we will look back on from the perspective of eternity and say, “Yes! I couldn’t see it at the time, but this is, and always was, the right road for me!”

He is in all, and always for us. No matter our choices. Past. Present. Future.

As you’ve probably guessed, Susie, David, and I wrestle with these questions in The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone. If you haven’t already, we’d love it if you’d pick up Cast the First Stone, the first book in the series and take the journey with us.

If you have been reading the series, you probably know that Blood From a Stone just released!

Brainstorming the series!

Would you Like to Win Yourself a Free Copy of Blood From a Stone or one of the books in the series? (Your choice.) All Three versions of that Book?

Yep, you could win a physical copy, an ebook copy, AND the audio version (voiced by yours truly). How? Easy. Just sign up for my newsletter and tell me in the comments that you’ve signed up. (If you’re already a subscriber to my newsletter, just let me know and you’ll be entered in the drawing.)

And if you’d like to check out the audio version and hear what Rem sounds like, just click right here. You’ll be taken to the Rembrandt Stone website. Scroll down to the bottom of the back to get the first chapter for free!

If you can’t wait, you can get Blood From a Stone at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, Kobo, Audible … just about everywhere books and audio books are sold!

I am already a subscriber of your newsletter. And I truly enjoy reading them! Your newsletters are like little devotionals…as I’m going through emails and dealing with whatever is in may day, I see a newsletter from you, and I open it up and read knowing I’m about to get a “lift me up” to my day. A brief pause to get a note reminding me of things bigger than the details of daily living. A perspective shift even if that shift is just to remind me that while the details are important, the bigger picture is to live life to glorify God. Often, I need that shift and it brightens my day, makes it less heavy and puts that song back in my heart. Blessings to you as you continue to use God’s gift of writing to encourage others.

I sometimes think about being able to change a mistake that I made. But, more often than not, I fantasize about being able to go back and change me! I would have like to be bolder. Stronger. Braver. I would like to have made smarter choices.

I subscribed. And I agree with you, given the chance to undo our past, we shouldn’t. God has worked the promise of Romans 8:28 through my life so wonderfully, I wouldn’t change a thing!
