A Crucial Lesson from an American Idol Loser

Darci and I don’t watch American Idol these days, but something happened this season I believe is worth learning from.

My title for this post isn’t completely accurate. This singer didn’t really get the chance to lose. He tried out in 2011, and made it to Hollywood, but was cut once he got there.

Would you have tried out again? Or quit?

He tried out again the next year, 2012. Again he made it to Hollywood, and this time he made the top 42. But he got the boot before he could make the top 24. Once again, no chance to lose on the big stage.

Would you have gone through the pain and struggle of trying out a third time?

Not sure if I would have. He was told a singer like him was unlikely to make it, didn’t fit the mold, his style wouldn’t resonate with the voting mass of America Idol.

But he did the illogical thing and ignored the naysayers, went home and worked on his craft, and tried out a third time.

I’m guessing you already know where this is going.

He (Caleb Johnson) just snagged the brass ring and was crowned American Idol, 2014.

Don’t Do It

Don’t give up. Whatever your passion, dream, calling …. don’t let it go. Press in. I’m tempted all the time to let go of the rope and stop climbing. You’re so not alone.

I’ll make you a deal. I won’t give up if you won’t.

We good on that?
