Quick Jim Intro

For those who don’t know me, I’m a husband, dad, friend, guitar player, and a bestselling, Christy Hall of Fame author. I have two outstanding grown sons and live with my amazing wife in eastern Washington state.

You can find out more about me here on my website and can subscribe to my newsletter in the upper right part of this page if you’d like to be encouraged, inspired and sometimes challenged, as well as find out the latest things going on with me.

Enough intro ’cause I’m really exited to tell you about a brand new project four years in the making. A six book series, co-authored with my dear friend Susan May Warren and her son, David. Here’s a look at the first book in the series, Cast the First Stone, and the story of how the three of us wrote six books together, and still liked each other at the end!

Here’s the story:

The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone series was a long time coming. Ages ago (probably around 2012) Susie and I (Jim) were on a short plane ride together from Asheville, NC to Atlanta. We started talking about someday writing a book together and shared our love of time travel stories.

Then in mid 2016 Susie came up with an idea for a series starring a guy named Rembrandt Stone. She called me, briefly described the idea and asked, “Are you in?” I laughed and gave the only appropriate response: “Are you kidding?”

Susie asked her son David to join the team and in February of 2017 the three of us gathered at my home in eastern Washington (after Susie and David battled a Seattle and eastern Washington snowstorm) and we brainstormed all six of the stories. What the Process of Writing a Novel(s) Together Looks Like

Every collaboration is different so this is only our story. As just mentioned, we brainstormed the six books over a long weekend and when we say brainstormed the books we mean we outlined—in detail—the entire plot and all the twists and turns for each story.

Then in the spring and summer of 2020 Susie started writing the manuscripts while David and I weighed in on the various changes that came up during the drafting. Then David and I edited the stories and finally, I took the finished manuscript into my studio and recorded the audio version(s).

What Each of Us Brings to the Collaboration

One of the fun things about this collaboration is the mixing of two voices. It’s like taking a cab and a merlot and blending them. Both Susie and I have romance in our other novels, with Susie having a lot and Jim having a splash. So with Rembrandt it’s a little more for Jim and a little less for Susie. Nice blend!

Certainly there are more fantastical elements (time travel) with this series—which are of course a staple of Jim’s stories and not as much with Susie’s. So again, a little less for Jim, a little more for Susie. Plus action, suspense, mystery … there’s a reason Ted Dekker says, “Cast the First Stone is a mind-bender of the first order.”

And what David brings is not only his brilliance in brainstorming plots, but he’s our webmaster and Time Lord, keeping all the time travel elements logical (as logical as time travel can be!) across all six books.

What Cast the First Stone is About

The short version: Rembrandt Stone is a detective who time travels in order to solve cold cases. But it’s of course much more complex than that. Here’s the long version:

One case haunts him. One chance to fix the past. One mistake could cost him everything.

Ex-Minneapolis Police Detective Rembrandt Stone walked away from a career he loved—just the price of being sure he can come home to the wife and daughter he cherishes. But he can’t shake the deep regret over a case left behind.

When his mentor, the former Chief of Homicide dies and leaves Rembrandt with a box of cold cases and a mysterious watch, he finds himself thrust into a world he recognizes—a world from twenty years ago—the same world he’s woken from in a cold sweat a hundred times. But is it a dream, or some kind of twisted reality?

If he solves the case that plagues him, and justice is finally served, will it destroy the life he loves?

Strap in for a mind-bending, time travel thrill ride in Book One of this riveting new series, The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone.

What We Hope Readers Will Take Away From Cast the First Stone and the Rest of the Series

First we want them to go on a thrill ride. This series is like a roller coaster. High highs, low lows and a fast pace. But on a deeper level we want them to think about what they regret. What they’d do over if they had a chance and why they’d do it over. It’s something we all wrestle with and Rembrandt is definitely in the struggle of his life over find the answer to those questions.

Would you Like to Win Yourself a Free Copy of Cast the First Stone? All Three versions?

I have subscribed to your newsletter. I am so excited about this book. I started reading your works with “The Five Times I Met Myself”. It turned me on to the time travel genre. I have not missed a book of yours since. Keep up the good work. Thank you for being a part of this scavenger hunt and for telling the background of this new novel. I never would have known since it is listed on Goodreads as written by David Warren. Although now your newsletter will be the place I go to for info on your books!

You are a new-to-me author. My husband & I are retired and he gets most of his reading time in while waiting for me as I shop! (A win-win for both of us!). I found the story behind your collaboration very interesting. This series sounds like a series we both would like! We will check them out! Thank you for the opportunity to win a hard copy, an ebook and the audio version. I have recently began to enjoy audio books and find I can “read” far more that way!
