Scavenger Hunt Stop # 14!

Jim Giveaways 283 Comments

By now you probably know the drill but let’s do a quick review just in case my blog is the first place you’ve landed:

  • The Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt runs from April 4th at noon, through April 6th at midnight mountain time.
  • It starts here.
  • And ends here
  • You collect the clue in red at each stop.
  • Da Big Prizes are, a Kindle Fire HDX, a $100 gift cert, AND all of the novels on the hunt. (Thirty one!)
  • If you want to see all the participating authors and sites on one page, go here.

Now let’s get to my guest:

I’m hosting Lisa Harris, which is fun because we didn’t know each other till this hunt. You as readers often get the chance to meet authors new to you, sometimes we get the chance as well, so this is a treat.

And now, Lisa is going to teach us …

What to do if Faced with a Hostage Situation

Desperate times create desperate people. And desperate people are dangerous.

Have you ever imagined how you would react if you were faced with a life and death situation like a hostage situation? Would you stay calm? Would you panic? Would you rise up as a leader, or would you simply try to run? Maybe you’ve been already been through something like this. Or maybe the very thought sends chills up your spine.

A quick Google search will give you practical answers on how you should react if you find yourself in a hostage situation. Some of the top responses are first of all to stay calm. Everyone involved in the situation will be on edge, so adding to the drama will only make things worse.

It’s also important to be observant. Pay attention to what is going on around you, the captures, their descriptions, how many weapons they have, and the layout of where you are being held.

It’s also suggested that you shouldn’t try and be a hero or draw attention to yourself. You’re being used as a tool, so don’t be aggressive, and speak only when spoken to.

But even if you have information like this ahead of time, it’s hard to know how you would actually react. The good news is that most—if not all of us—will never find ourselves in a situation like this, but involvement in a hostage situation is exactly what my heroine from Fatal Exchange, Emily Hunt, finds herself in.

Emily comes from a family of cops, but she’s chosen a different life, and the role of a high school teacher suits her just fine. She has no interest in high-adrenaline situations like her father and sister. In fact, the most nerve-racking her life ever gets is during a football game with her school’s rivals or during final exams. Not having her life on the line.

Until the unthinkable happens—a hostage situation in her classroom—and she’s forced to draw on all of her strength to handle what happens next.

An ordinary person caught up in extraordinary events.

Writing this story made me think about the difficult things we face in life, and how we react to those situations. And while I hope none of us ever finds ourselves in a situation like this, life is full of difficult choices and challenging situations.

We all face trials in our lives. In fact, the Bible tells us to expect them. But how do we respond not just the tougher, life and death situations, but the smaller, day-to-day issues? How do we respond to difficult people? To unfairness at work? To a trying neighbor, child, or spouse? Sometimes these are the situations where it takes the most courage to be gracious, loving, and forgiving.

“A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.” Proverbs 15:1

Be blessed today!

Lisa Harris

Fatal Exchange: Emily Hunt might come from a family of cops, but she never goes looking for an adrenaline rush. She’ll have to draw on a well of strength and savvy she didn’t know she had as student Rafael Cerda takes her class hostage for ransom money to save his brother’s life. Fatal Exchange draws readers into a complex matrix of intertwining lives and unraveling secrets, where every answer creates more questions.

You can pick up Fatal Exchange at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, CBD, or your local bookstore.

Thanks, Lisa! Hope none of us are ever this type of situation, but if we are, now we know how to handle it.

I have read the first two Well Springs novels. I find them extremely thought-provoking and challenging. God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, yet we often put Him in a box of what we can understand. I’m not saying I believe everything in the books, but I do want to believe that All things are possible with God! Thank you

Always nice to see writers bringing the Northwest to life! I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like your books before, but they sounded interesting. I’ll have to check them out sometime; thanks!

Your books look interesting, James. I am a fellow Northwest gal myself =) I really like Emily’s intro for the topic of her book – drew me right in!

Hi Candi, for research, I have a number of books for writers written by police officers that have really helped. I also do a lot of online research, and spoke personally with a couple people who are police officers for their input on specific questions I had. I love research!

I still can’t believe that transportation and such are possible. Maybe my faith is lacking. I am interested in reading more about it though.

These books sound amazing! Here is my questions for either of you:
When did you make the choice to become a writer? Why did you make that choices?

      Hi Ryebrynn,

Not sure if you’re talking about Lisa’s books or mine, so I’ll say thanks from both of us. 🙂

Great question about becoming a writer. For me, I feel like I didn’t choose writing as much as it chose me. It’s been a dream I couldn’t get out of my head since I was eleven. But I was scared to take the leap and try it. Finally, in 2002 (thanks to my wife) I did. If you want to know the whole story, you can go to my About page here: https://jameslrubart.com/about/

And thanks for entering the giveaway!

Hi Ryebrynn! Thanks for stopping by! I too always wanted to write from a very young age, but didn’t until we adopted our oldest. I was a stay at home mom with no vehicle and he slept a lot, so I decided it was time to write a novel. And I did. That book was never published, but it was a story about a couple dealing with infertility–like I had–and it was very therapeutic. I found out that I love writing and while it took a number of years and books to be published, I never stopped. Now I write, hoping to inspire, encourage, and entertain.

I’ve heard many excellent things about your stories, and the summaries and covers are certainly intriguing. I’d love to read them someday!

Greetings! I read about your books at the stop before this on the Scavenger Hunt. Just reading the synopsis of the books and the little interview, I was thinking about Frank Peretti’s books! Count me as going to try and find your books 🙂 They look really cool! Same about Mrs. Lisa’s! Hostage situations are always exciting xD Keep writing for the Kingdom!

Thanks, Sarah! Have to tell you, one of the main characters in the first novel I wrote, Rooms, is named Sarah. 🙂 And thanks for entering my giveaway.

I found the interview you gave on the last stop very challenging. Thank you so much for sharing that and for the humility you show in your personal journey not summarily dismissing things you don’t yet understand. I respect that a lot.

I’ve signed up for your newsletter. Thanks for being a part of the scavenger hunt. I love online scavenger hunts – totally brings out the kid in me!

I don’t know if you ever participate in linky parties, but if you are ever so inclined, I’d love for you to join our book-loving community at Booknificent Thursdays on Mommynificent.com. I love James Rubart’s books. The first book I read was Rooms and totally enjoyed it. I like the analogy of the rooms in the house to the rooms in our hearts. I haven’t read any of this new series yet but they are on my TBR list 🙂
